Initial healthcare provider and opioid use in LBP?

Image
Stimulated by Kazis et al 2019.[1] Photo by Aiony Haust on Unsplash . This photo was chosen to represent opioids being used on back pain because the first naturally occurring opioids were discovered in a flower. Yes, it is a shame (for my purposes here) that this artistic photographer did not use poppies :-). I am sure some will interpret this photo in other ways, but my focus was the flowers and the gestalt aesthetic. This paper popped up on my PubMed searches yesterday morning, and I had a quick look at the abstract whilst walking from Paddington to the NCVO for one of our big London courses. It seemed interesting and topical but the abstract did not mention acupuncture at all, so I wasn’t sure it would be suitable to highlight here. But I was wrong! This is another huge retrospective observational study using health insurance data, rather like those I have previously highlighted on this blog from Taiwan and Korea under the ‘ big data ‘ category. This one is from the US and...

This cozy cauliflower casserole is filled with chewy gnocchi pasta pillows and Parmesan cheese, and it’s seriously easy to make. Double win! If you’re anything like us, you’re obsessed with cauliflower. Ten years ago we didn’t even have the know-how to consider the words obsessed and cauliflower in the same sentence. Zucchini Lentil Fritters with Spread and Extra Veg

Image
I have another recipe that started as an instagram-only recipe but rightfully deserved a place on the site. Lentils are a staple in my kitchen and one ingredient that people always want more inspiration for (because you can only eat so much lentil soup!) Zucchini and other alternatives Obviously I realize zucchini season is coming to an end but if you’re like me, there’s still a bit of summer produce hanging on. These fritters work perfectly with raw zucchini. However, I think you could do a similar concept with shredded winter squash or root vegetables. The spread Really this dish comes together because of the spread- I’d highly recommend not skipping it. I usually turn to hummus for this job but really any kind of spread would work. Think romesco, pureed vegetables, or whipped feta or goat cheese. Vegetable Salads, for topping The final part of this bowl is the fresh topping. During summer this is easy: tomatoes, cucumber, loads of fresh herbs; it’s hard to go wrong. During t...

Vegetarian Split Pea Soup

Image
Many of you were enthusiastic about the lentil soup recipe I posted a few weeks back. Today’s split pea soup recipe is similar in spirit. It’s a delicious, healthy, textured soup made from an impossibly short list of ingredients. Seriously, just five! No ham hocks in this version, simply green split peas and onions cooked until tender, partially pureed, seasoned and flared out with toppings. Like many lentil soups, this one delivers many of the same nutritional benefits – a good amount of vegetable protein and plenty of staying power. It is hearty and filling, and even better reheated later in the day. You can find dried split green peas in many natural foods stores, I picked these up in the bin section at Whole Foods Market. Split Pea Soup: Finishing Touches I like to finish each bowl with a generous drizzle of golden olive oil, a few flecks of lemon zest, and a dusting of smoked paprika to give the soup some smoky depth. If you have scallions or toasted nuts on hand (pictur...
