Could Fasting Benefit Your Health?
For most of my career I believed fasting wasn’t a good idea. However, I have since learned that it can actually be a great tool when used properly and for the right reasons. Studying and reading more about the concept of fasting has really opened my eyes. If you have ever wondered about why people fast or the possible benefits of fasting, keep reading!
What is fasting exactly?
To fast means that you are not ingesting any calories. Generally, while fasting, many people still drink water, tea, coffee, seltzer water and other similar things with no calories and nothing added.
Who shouldn’t be fasting
There are some people that should not fast because of certain conditions they have. Here are a couple cases where fasting could be harmful – If any of these situations apply to you, please do not fast.
- If you have extreme adrenal fatigue, fasting can make it so that you cannot sustain your blood sugar.
- If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, you shouldn’t be fasting.
The benefits of fasting
- It helps reset your metabolism.
- It can help heal insulin resistant type diabetes – when the cells don’t recognize insulin.
- For people with digestive problems, fasting can be really helpful. By not putting any food through your digestive system for a length of time, this can allow your pancreas to reset. This is one of the most significant benefits of fasting.
- If you have SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) or some digestive problem where bacteria tend to multiply rapidly, you could benefit from fasting. It can allow the bacteria to die off due to not being fed.
Intermittent fasting
There are many ways to fast but intermittent fasting is one of the most commonly used methods. Intermittent fasting is where you fast for a certain number of hours every day or for a day or two during the week. For example, you could have dinner at 6pm and you don’t have any food or snacks until breakfast at 8am – which would be 14 hours of fasting. This would be the easiest way to do a fast or to start experimenting with how fasting makes you feel.
I will explain more of the different levels and methods of fasting later on the blog. Fasting is something I have been experimenting in different ways over the last couple years and have a lot to share on this topic. The next fast I’m trying is called a Super Fast!
